April 1st - A month of Colour...or Color ;o)

The wonderful Leah over at the Creative Every Day Blog has announced that the optional theme for April is Colour.
Ever since she announced it I've been thinking "Oh yeah - I can do that!".

Actually ever since Leah announced it, my mind has thought of little else other than colours ....appearing to have gone off on wild tangents of it's own accord, revisiting distant memories & dreams.
The brain cells briefly revisited facts learned years ago when I was researching historical costuming in order to acquire the right fabrics & textiles to complete some projects at the time, before taking of in the direction of favourite exotic locations & all that nature has to offer.

The colours that we take for granted these days haven't always been so easily obtainable. Naturally occurring pigments such as the ochres and the iron oxides have been used as colourants since very early times, but the one whose history always fascinated me was Purple – the colour of royalty & wealth.

Have you ever wondered why Purple was the colour of Royalty, associated with power, pomp & ceremony, & often associated with words such as "Imperial"?

Purple was purportedly first produced by the Canaanites (or Phoenicians according to the Greek) in the Land of Canaan, from the mucus of various marine molluscs, but most notably the Murex. Then again later discoveries showed the same shells unearthed on Crete – so it could be perhaps that the Minoans were producing the dye centuries beforehand.
No matter who discovered it first, it took around 12,000 shellfish & an extremely drawn out (& smelly) process to produce a meagre 1.5 grams of the dye they called ‘purpura’…. which would have been enough to dye a single toga. This became known as Tyrian Purple.

Emperors were known to refuse their wives robes dyed with purpura – simply because the dyed silk would cost more than it’s weight in gold.
With the fall of Constantinople in 1453 large scale production of Tyrian Purple ceased.

It was found that a similar colour could be produced from the same species of plant that produces Indigo. Indigo is one of the oldest dyes to be used textile dying & made it’s way from India to Europe & North Africa via the various trade routes. This alone meant it was a luxury item in many civilisations.

Over the years ‘purple’, as a colour, changed. Right through to Elizabethan times there were restrictions as to who could wear purple, essentially it was limited to immediate family of royalty.

Computers are unable to display the true purples – but the closest we can come is this.

In the mid 1800’s William Perkin, an 18 year old chemistry student managed to isolate the first aniline dye – bringing purple to the masses.

Fortunately, Manganese and Manganese Dioxide, the ions used in colouring glass purple are much easier to find. The Egyptians were using this very early on in their history. Then again they were also using ground, powdered Lapis Lazuli as an eye shadow (believing it to improve eyesight). Later, lapis was used as a pigment in paint, but best that I don’t even start on the history of ‘blues’….

Next time you see purple in nature, or in the stores, admire that piece of fabric & think of how fortunate we are to have it so easily available....for wearing, at least, it wasn't always thus ;o)

Disclaimer: I have no personal affiliation with purple what so ever. I've never worn it & never will ....well, apart from purple nail polish.
And, I'll bet you all thought I'd start with orange ;o)

Things that Float My Boat & Colour My World

If I had to pick the singular thing that has the most impact on my core being, it would have to be colour. Colour is the essence that all else that inspires me centers around.

Right now, in my corner, of the world I am enjoying looking at the bright greens of the new growth on the tree's.. that new fresh yellow green that gradually matures as the season advances into many rich deeper shades of green.

Colour is what attracts me to all else that inspires me, closely followed by texture. Perhaps that is part of the reason why, although I can appreciate the colours of the scenery & various landscapes here in New Zealand, I mourn the lack of interesting native animals & bugs. To put it mildly everything from our bugs to our birds are boring, dull, plain & pretty much totally & unequivocally uninspiring. Take the ugly giant weta from Thursdays post - what colour was it??? Brown - yep brown!! Case in point!

I wont even go into the fact that it looks like it fell from the ugly tree & hit every branch on the way down.

Now brown is ok is some situations - like as a background to orange...

The problem is I love all sorts of critters, birds, animals, bugs & ... dare I admit it even snakes. So here are a few colourful critters out of my inspiration folder that never fail to make me stop & take a breath, marvel at the colour that surrounds us on this amazing technicolour planet of ours... & of course want to travel to the places that they call 'home'!

All of this just goes to show you that even though the grass may not be greener - the animals are sure as blazes brighter ;o)

Dying to Play With Colour! (& textiles)

I’ve always been a textile junkie – or fabric ho ….take your pick of phrases. To be honest ‘textile junkie' would probably be more accurate though.

I’m a pretty tactile person – so fabrics, fibers, textures & patterns have intrigued since a young age - very young it seems … when I was little I used to suck my thumb & stroke the corner seam of my pillow case!

It’s not something that went away as I grew either , apart from the thumb sucking which I apparently stopped the day I started school when I realised no one else was doing it (talk about easily led - lol!). It progressed into full on sewing & of course the inevitable fabric hoarding – until I discovered glass.

So today, when a stupid dodgy router enforced multiple breaks from the internet, I finally optimized some time by doing what I have been itching to do for ages. I got out the beautiful Dupion Silk ties/strings I had started edging last night when said dodgy router first started misbehaving, some Kool Aid kindly sent by Mallory & a 1kg bag of expired date ground espresso coffee - & started playing .

I had no choice but to be creative, experimental & adventurous in my combinations of things to try, as I am not a huge fan of bright brights – I prefer more muted, muddy tones of most colours.

I’m rather pleased with the results – but the sucky camera has not picked them up well at all (I shall try again tomorrow in daylight rather than with the flash.

Did I mention that I also have a somewhat intense & torrid affair with colour? (shhhh – don’t tell Allan!). Not so much the colours I wear….but the colours that surround me hugely affect me & influence the way I feel - once started with this wonderful colour play I just could not stop - I think I may have gone into overdrive for an experiment on silk, the end result of which is pretty much unuseable.

Now all I have to do is source a reasonably priced supplier of Dupion (not Spotlight – that’s for sure) & some 100% cotton serging/overlocking threads so I can eliminate that pesky white border.

You know right now I’m kind of reluctant to put my sewing machine & overlocker away…..I almost feel a need to play with some more textiles ……..
